Carla Makes

Performance

I am most adept at working without a script, and make shows which involve improvising or finding games in the moment. I tend to work in character or as an exaggerated version of myself, either semi-improvised such as in drag or clown pieces, or with other people in a fully-improvised narrative show. Often, you'll see me play lots of characters in one production.
I have also performed lots of scripted work in the past, such as full-length plays, stand-up comedy, and as a voice actor. The combination of a BA in English, a visual imagination, and extensive practical training means I am also a confident and articulate voice in a rehearsal space, and can offer diplomatic and knowledgeable directing and dramaturgy.
Highlights

Max Velocity is a one-man, one-hour, interactive, intergalactic planetary comedy experience. It included the following: mullet-based humour, non-mullet-based music, and Max’s unconventional approach to astronaut training. Max Velocity has performed at Camden People's Theatre, Cambridge Junction, and the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.

Max Velocity Takes Up Space
//SEED

// SEED was conceived during the 2020 UK lockdown. It is a one-to-one encounter across the video chat platform Zoom where both the performer (Carla) and participant share the task of planting seeds, while sharing a semi-scripted conversation.

The Ministry of Unplanned Occurrences
I am artistic director of The Ministry of Unplanned Occurrences. We make 'moment-specific' theatre – shows which are unscripted, live and playful. Generally, our shows are naturalistic with a touch of magical reality. All of them are linked by way we play with light and shade, comedy and drama, and our love of live and in-the-moment storytelling.

Work-in-Progress
