Carla Makes

Performance
I am most adept at working without a script, and I tend to make pieces which involve a large amount of improvising or finding games in the moment. Generally, I either work as a theatrical clown or as myself, usually with 'beats' in mind (an idea of what you need to be talking about or doing at a particular time in a script).
Sometimes, I work entirely in character, either in a semi-improvised solo piece with beats, such as with drag or character comedy, or with other people in an improvised scene as part of a longer show. Often, you'll see me play lots of characters in one production.
I have also performed lots of scripted work in the past, such as full-length plays, stand-up comedy, and voice acting, and use my improvisation skills to bring to life the inner and outer lives of scripted characters for an audience.

Max Velocity Takes Up Space
//SEED

// SEED was conceived during the 2020 UK lockdown. It is a one-to-one encounter across the video chat platform Zoom where both the performer (Carla) and participant share the task of planting seeds, while sharing a semi-scripted conversation.

The Ministry of Unplanned Occurrences
I am artistic director of The Ministry of Unplanned Occurrences. We make 'moment-specific' theatre – shows which are unscripted, live and playful. Generally, our shows are naturalistic with a touch of magical reality. All of them are linked by way we play with light and shade, comedy and drama, and our love of live and in-the-moment storytelling.

A show with a clown in it. I'm working out who they are, how they play, and how much they want to be scripted...
